UN General Assembly to be Honored at The 2015 South-South Awards
NEW YORK, 1 September 2015 -- The 2015 South-South Awards is set to honor the United Nations General Assembly at its 70th Anniversary as the international body spearheading development frameworks toward a better and safer world for people and planet.
In its fifth year, the 2015 South-South Awards takes place at a historic moment supporting the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda at September’s United Nations Summit and the general debate of the UN General Assembly led by H.E. Mogens Lykketoft, the incoming President of the 70th Session.
”South-South Cooperation is vital to realizing global aspirations for sustainable development. It is important to recognize the great progress we have seen to date while at the same time to energize the global community to achieve much more. I am committed to focus the work of the General Assembly in its 70th year on a new commitment to action.”
The participation of the President of the UN General Assembly during this landmark year is a significant contribution to the Awards as it celebrates the impactful strides made in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and places the spotlight on the imperative for a new and rededicated commitment to implement the succeeding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a global climate change agreement.
This precedent-setting year at the UN will be highlighted at the gala event among other major accomplishments achieved through cross-cultural and sectoral cooperation as well as public-private partnerships. The Awards honor distinguished countries, individuals and organizations that embody transformative sustainable development worldwide; particularly in the areas of poverty reduction, education advancement and humanitarian impact.
William F. Austin built Starkey Hearing Technologies into a global leader in hearing, and he has used success in the business world to impact the lives of millions of people in need as founder of Starkey Hearing Foundation. The Foundation has worked in more than 100 countries, and in the last year alone, it has provided more than 175,000 hearing aids worldwide. Austin and the Foundation open a whole new world of opportunity for the people they help, and they ensure the sustainability of their efforts by building community-based systems of hearing healthcare around the world.
"At Starkey Hearing Foundation, hearing is our vehicle to reflect caring, connect people in need to their communities and empower them to achieve their full potential in life,” said Austin. “We know that to truly make a difference it takes the hands of many, and I am honored to be part of this important event, surrounded by so many others. Alone we can't do much - together we can change the world.”
Ambassador Alexandru Cujba, the Executive Chairman of the 2015 South-South Awards, is confident this edition of the gala will mark a milestone for the annual celebration.
“Our aim is to highlight the role that the UN has had over the last 70 years, not only in the area of preserving peace and security but also in promoting global development. We also want to emphasize the achievements of developing countries, big and small, in implementing the MDGs and moving toward a new Post-2015 Development Agenda. We want these lessons to be shared as widely as possible and be transferred to other countries.”
Held at the iconic Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York on 26 September 2015, the South-South Awards is the premier event for honoring development achievements. Guests are invited to join the international community in reflecting on successes of the past while moving forward with a new universal global development agenda with steadfast and transformative momentum.
